A Day in the Life (23)

Well, I've had my car all of three weeks, and I have to get the radiator fan replaced.  Hopefully that's all it is, and if that's not covered by my warranty there will be WORDS. and ACTIONS.  I mean come on! Three weeks!

In more uplifting news, I have a gig on Halloween where I'll be performing music for a silent film which is kind of like the most awesome thing ever, and it looks like I might be getting an oboe student soon, so yay for the music life.

And ohmygod I found out Tamora Pierce things!!
1. Numair is based on Jeff Goldmlum (*swoons*)
2. Kyprioth is based on Bruce Coville (who is one of her bffs, and who was one of my favourite authors as a kid. I had a ton of autographed books from him!)
3. She has plans for more Kel books and so many characters an zomg I am so excited!

I'm so obsessed with LP right now.  I mean this is her singing live!! Also listen to that whistle.  *Sighs*, maybe one day, I too will be able to whistle... Also she plays the ukulule.  Seriously. Listen to this song if it's the only thing you today. You won't regret it!

Waiting for the Right Monster to Come Along: On Twilight, Abusive Relationships, and YA Saves - An interesting dilemma between believing that dark content shouldn't be censored and glorifying abusive relationships
Back to School… or not?: Education after the Apocalypse and in the Dystopia - A discussion of why dystopias are so popular, and whether the way education is dealt with in them is part of it.  This post is AWESOME and well worth a read!
B.J. Novak Proves That Kids' Books Don't Need Pictures - Apparently the Office alum has written a kid's book and he has some pretty insightful things to say about kid's books in general.
Chocolate and Honey: Disenfranchised Teachers and Children in Harry Potter and Matilda - Another really, really interesting read about book teachers from The Book Wars
After Paris: Meta, Irony, Narrative, Frames, and The Princess Bride - This makes me want to reread the book! It nails all the reasons I didn't like the book at first, but it makes me want to give it another go.
The Books That Made Me Who I Am - This is so remarkably beautiful, and so perfectly describes the way I feel about the books that shaped me.
Slarom, the Backward Morals of Fairytales - Not that I ever thought that the morals of fairytales were a good place to look, but this certainly brings up some interesting thoughts on the matter. (Especially in regards to who the true villains are, and who ends up with the punishments)
Powerful Words: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Clearly THGttG resonated with me as well - my blog title and subtitle thingie are both an homage to the books.

Sarah J. Maas

Up close with author Sarah J. Maas - An interview with the lovely SJM. And the interviewer clearly describes what the series means to me, and it's beautiful.
Awesome News, A Thank-You, And Some HEIR OF FIRE Music - If you don't follow her blog you SHOULD, because then you get amazing things like her soundtracks for certain scenes.  And holy GOD - if you haven't read the scenes while this music is playing...just. Trust me. If you thought you felt all the feels, it is nothing, NOTHING to how epic it is when the music is playing. Go do it. Right now. I'll wait.

Emma Watson He for She - I'm sure most of you have seen this, but for those of you who haven't, it is well worth listening to all 12 minutes of her speech.
Thoughts: Online Friends - This is still something I'm figuring out when I talk to other people about my "friends" (aka all of you I've met through blogging!).  I have to say even people my age look at me kind of funny though, so it's not something I explain often.

And with that, I leave you with this awesome/slightly creepy Hermione music video. You're welcome.

Three weeks, seriously? I've had stuff in my fridge for longer than that, haha. Butcongrats on the Halloween Gig, good luck! I can't whistle either, I've tried to learn but nope. I'M GOING TO HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE HEIR OF FIRE MUSIC. Though I might not be able to handle it. HEIR OF FIRE. :(

  2. 1. Princess Bride: I liked the book, but I didn't love it. Probably because it wasn't the movie. Haha. But I love what she was talking about with "warm irony". I love a good satire, but in the same way the author does too. It was such a good way to put it.
    2. Fairytales: interesting...but I was never particularly concerned with the morality of fairytales. I've always found them very....grey. Especially with today's standards.
    3. Boyfriend sorting hat: so fun! But I disagree with Nikolai (the only one I disagreed with) being in Slytherin. I think Ravensclaw. Thoughts? I can't remember if you read the series?
    4. HP Obscure Character: I'm Reginald Cattermole too!
    5. Raven Cycle (AHHHH THE NEXT BOOK IS ALMOST OUT!!): A toss up between Adam and Noah. Hmm.
    6. Friday 20: Have you read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell? I quite enjoyed it. I love historical fantasy and/or magical realism too. I really liked that JS&MN had this but was also written in the style of a book from that time period. Very Jane Austen-ish.

  3. Pretty much haha - luckily it's not going to cost me anything, and in the meantime I'm driving a super fancy new car! It's going to ruin me for driving my car for a while, which I DO love...but a twelve year old car feels much different to drive from a new car haha.

Thanks! I'm super excited :). And man, being a wind player and not being able to whistle is like...just WHY can't I do it?! I love it so much. I'm pretty much guaranteed to love any song with whistling, too *grumble grumble*

Ummm yeah. I'd recommend doing this activity by yourself. With the door closed. Commmense immediate weeping haha

  4. 1. Yeah, it's really the first time I've had someone put into words something that might describe why I look certain types of satire (Princess Bride, Monty Python) but not others (like comedian roasts, etc.) It just feels mean otherwise, which makes me feel rather uncomfortable.
    2. Definitely! I don't know if it's just that I'm obsessed with fairy tales or if there's just a sudden flood of interesting articles about fairy tales, but I've been coming across LOADS of interesting fairy tale articles lately.
    3. I have not - BUT I just checked out the first book! It's crazy - the library has 25 people waiting for the next book. TWENTY FIVE. I mean this series isn't even kind of new!
    4. HA twins!
    5. At least Adam/Noah makes rather more sense than a cross between Gansey and Chainsaw hahahaha
    6. I haven't, and I don't know why because it sounds like everything I love! Especially if it's Jane Austenish. There's a reread going on for the book this month, so I'm hoping to read it if I can snag a copy (I actually HAVE one, but I left it at my mom's place and that thing is giant so I don't feel like I can ask her to ship it lol)

  5. 1. Agreed!!
    3. I will be so interested to see what you think about this series! I can see you really liking it, but also I can see you feeling like it was over-hyped. We'll have a lot to talk about either way. Also, only 25? Of course, Seattle is one of the highest library using areas, so I feel like waitlists are always really long here. I think HP was like 500 people when the new book came out.
    5. I dunno. I think Gansey and Chainsaw is rather poetic. And both are tied to Ronan and are protective of him. Plus both are very intelligent. So maybe it makes more sense that at first glance?
    6. Another book I would love to hear your thoughts on. It takes awhile to really get into the writing and it isn't splashy, but it is also really engrossing. I think if you can read Austen, you can read this though.

  6. 500?!?! O.O I guess I have to put it in perspective - my library county was small growing up, so there weren't many books to begin with. And I've come to the conclusion that no one checks out books in Chicago because there's like never a hold line, and they pretty much have ALL the books. Which I miss. So freaking much. The library here doesn't have anything. Luckily I still have access to the Chicago ebook library mwahahaha

...It sounds so profound when you put it that way. I officially feel profoundish.

I'll definitely shoot you a text/Goodreads message when I get to either of the books!
