Feature and Follow Friday (1) - The Last Book That Made Me Cry

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

This is my very first Feature and Follow post!  After last month where I didn't really have much to say about the TTT topics, I've decided to add this meme on weeks when I'm not doing a TTT post (if I like the topic for this one).  I have really missed doing memes because quite honestly it's one of the best ways to meet people.  But I'm not going to force myself to do them if I don't have anything to say for the topic, so this is my way of compromising while still getting to meet new people.

On to the question - what was the last book that made me cry?  This one's a real winner, I'm sure many of you will agree:

The Book Thief

This book pretty much DESTROYED me!  I won't say much more on the subject, because I actually sort of reviewed it, but I have never ugly cried so hard in my life.  As I say in the review, I had to put the book down towards the end because I cried so hard I literally couldn't see the pages anymore!  I had a really, really intense reaction with the book that was wholly unexpected (I mean I knew it was sad, but I was NOT expecting such a visceral response).  I was a little late to the party on this one though, so I imagine most of your books are different.

So what was the last book that made you cry?  Leave me a link in the comments!  (No really, leave me a link or I won't be able to find your blog! Unless you have Disqus and have added the link to your blog in the profile)

  1. I might've had tears of boredom from The Book Thief, but I otherwise felt absolutely nothing. I wrote a very scathing review of it on my blog awhile ago, laying out all the reasons I hated it and found it massively overrated. I had to bite my tongue when everyone else was squeeing all over it by my YA Lit class. Books with massive hype tend to either do nothing for me, or I actively dislike them.

  2. It definitely dragged for a lot of the book (and it is a BIG book) which
is a big part of why I was so surprised it made me cry so much. I mean
it was like la la la and then BAM. Waterworks. Wholly unexpected on
my part haha. I'm very much the same - I don't usually do well with
hyped up books (Divergent most recently), so I've decided this year I am
going to try and stay away from any and all reviews of books I haven't
read (with a few exceptions. Because I am incapable of following the
rules I set for myself haha)

  4. This is one of my tear-jerker titles too, although I refrained from ugly-crying!!

I love the look of your blog and your Douglas Adams quote :-)

  15. Ooh I haven't read this book yet but I know i should! I wish I could have such strong reactions with books as you do, to be honest. Not being able to cry makes me feel like a robot or something lol! Thanks for stopping by! I followed back via GFC.

  16. I feel the exact same way about memes. I only do them if I have something worthwhile to offer. However, I'm totally there with you on The Book Thief. I can kind of see where CarrieAnne is coming from because the book was a bit long and tedious but I loved it and this one definitely sparked an ugly cry for me! Great choice!

You know I've been following you for a while, haha :)

  17. Yeah I'm so glad I didn't try and read this in public! i would have looked entirely insane haha.

Thank you! Since I review mostly YA, most people don't seem to get the Adams reference haha it always makes me happy when someone does!

  18. Woah a guy book blogger! You guys are like a mythical species as far as I can tell! I tried commenting back on your blog, but it seems to only accept Google + comments? (And long story short...I had stalker problems so I had to delete my + account and am not planning on opening it again). In any case thanks for stopping by! I'm a GFC follower on your blog, and if there IS a way to comment without a Google + profile let me know!

  19. Yeah that's the reasoning I had when I finally sucked it up and read it haha. I don't do depressing stories very well...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am totally the same - I've put this off for five years haha! I really, really procrastinate when it comes to depressing things. (It took me 10 years to watch Last of the Mohicans)

    ReplyDelete
  21. If you own it you should definitely read it! But when you're alone. With a box of tissues.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It really is! I was actually surprised that it really followed the Germans, which is not what I'm used to reading a WWII novel.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah. I cry really easily, so I didn't stand a chance with this one haha

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah I was definitely wary as well - I don't do depressing books well haha. Of course as soon as I read it I decided I couldn't handle seeing the movie so :( no Geoffrey Rush for me

    ReplyDelete
  25. If you like tearjerkers, this should definitely be on the list haha

    ReplyDelete
  26. Maybe we should meld and create a reader who reacts in the middle haha!

  27. I've been feeling pretty uninspired about blogging (mostly because I've been so crazy busy) so I figured adding unnecessary stress was not the way to go haha!

Yeah I think that's why my response at the end came as such a surprise! There was such a slow build up and I definitely wasn't as absorbed in the book as I had expected to be (until I was and just hadn't noticed).

  28. You told me you featured TBT on your blog today too when you visited my post, but I wanted to visit you anyway, just on principle. Because TBT was just so wonderful! :D Happy Friday! :D

  31. I'm so late to this party. I haven't cracked this one open yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list. I'll keep the tissues near-by!

Thanks for following my blog. I've followed you on GFC and BlogLovin'. My FF!

  32. It was - I'm glad I finally got around to reading it! Thanks for stopping by :)

  33. They're actually Hitchhiker's Guide references, but I'm glad you found them entertainging haha!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah I definitely put it off for a while because I procrastinate about things that I KNOW are sad (which is why I still haven't read TFIOS)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Definitely recommended haha. You might be like me and think you won't need them but you would be wrong haha

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nonono. You *must* read TFIOS--and not just because the movie is coming out. It's actually a seriously funny book.I was either sobbing, admittedly, or laughing hysterically--sometimes laughing so hard I cried. It was almost exhausting to enjoy a book that much...but I managed. ;) haha. You should definitely read it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ahahaha! It does help knowing it's funny too. I PROMISE I will read it! (But it took me 5 years to work up to the Book Thief, so I'm working on it. I'm betting it'll be in the next couple months though!)
