A Day in the Life (9)

So it's been a little while since I've done one of these posts, so you'd think I'd have a lot to say.  There's been a lot of drama with my future, but my future is something I like to think about as little as possible so...I don't have much to talk about.  (Sometimes I think the blog was born entirely out of procrastination.  I think I'm going to add music to these posts - one classical, one not (this is totally not because I have nothing to talk about) BECAUSE WHY NOT.

So I just discovered this album and this is probably my favourite song. This video is really...weird, but it makes a bit more sense when you start from the beginning of the album.  They've done a music video for each song and put together they make a movie (which is how I found out about it in the first place), so if you want to see them all, start here.

Bookish Things

Since I've got two or three weeks worth of posts, I've tried to divide them up for easier choosing what you want to read!

General Blogging/Reading

On Reading Your Reviews - Author Carrie Mesrobian (Sex & Violence) talks about blogger etiquette when it comes to tagging authors in reviews
#RBWL Spring 2014 Recap - Shae recaps some of the highlights from the 3rd #RBWL
Writing in Books - This brings up some interesting points (although I'm not sure I'll ever be able to bring myself to scrawl all over my books)
Being A Midnight Reader - Yep. Totally get it.
Three Books That Define You - NPR asks (and Lianne tells hers) what three books define you? I'd probably have The Amber Spyglass, the Song of the Lioness quartet, and A Ring of Endless Light on my list (off the top of my head anyway)

 Harry Potter

The Blogging Unicorn and the Prisoner of Azkaban: A Harry Potter Newbie Visits Hogwarts - Oh my god guys this is HILARIOUS! If you ever wanted to relive reading the Harry Potter books for the first time...you should read these because they are AWESOME (and did I mention hilarious?)
Harry Potter Chapter 10/11 reread - "Likely that she prefers to get scolded for brashness and/or arrogance over what might be perceived as weakness.  And doesn’t that just make her a true Gryffindor as well." << That, my friends, is just so spot on. This post really nails Hermione's character!
I'm Going to Hogwarts - Oh my god what?? This is a THING?!

Disney/Fairy Tales

Disney Characters Sorted Into Hogwarts Houses - I actually had a hard time seeing what some of the characters were sorted into, but after much focus, I think I mostly agree? (Also why is Belle so mad at the Beast?)
Beauty and the Beast in Picturebooks - We all knew I had a fairy tale obsession, yes? Well The Book Wars (who's blog you should all IMMEDIATELY go read because it is amazing and thought provoking and yes. Do it.) put together a great compilation of picture books and why these ones are so great!
The Colours in Fairytales - Can I reiterate my obsession with fairy tales? I love this author - she always has such thought provoking things to say about fairy tales and fantasy, and this post definitely brings up some things I hadn't thought about before!
Project Disney- Winnie the Pooh (2011) - You guys know I'm obsessed with Disney right? Well if you are too, you should check out Angela's Project Disney where she talks about both the movie and the book it was based on. This one's on Winnie the Pooh which never gets enough love!

 YA in Movies

The Cinematic Explosion of Young Adult Books - The author talks about the successes (and failures) of YA adaptions
There's A New Featurette For The Giver, and Thank God, It's Got Scenes In Black and White - Yeah, nope. Nopety nope nope.  I'm so not sold, this book is IMPORTANT and I feel like the film is just going to miss everything great about it.  Also what is with that soundtrack??

Thought provoking

George Packer: Is Amazon Bad for Books? - Wow.  This is quite long, but it brings up a lot of troubling things and is really quite worth the read! It's definitely given me a lot to mull over.
Cover Trends in YA Fiction: Why the Obsession with an Elegant Death? - This is a fantastic read about women, objectification, beauty, and death
Confessions of a Speculative Fiction Reader - This is an extremely powerful post that resonated with me in a lot of ways. And I think it deals with a lot of the reasons why I choose to read fantasy.
Why giving science a blanket approach doesn't work - Definitely interesting, and something I hadn't devoted much thought to before.  SPEAK and Steubenville: Can YA Help? - Yes, yes it can.

Uh...random bookish things?

‘Speak’ turns 15: Author Laurie Halse Anderson on the book’s life and legacy - This was a lovely interview, and if you love Anderson's books, definitely tune in for this.
10 Profound Children's Book Quotes That Probably Changed Your Life - So these all made me teary eyed...*sniffles* Charlotte's Web, anyone?
Laini Taylor discusses 'Dreams of Gods and Monsters' - My copy from the library is on its way!!
Across-the-Tub Satin Nickel Caddy - I NEED THIS.

Nonbookish Things

Open Letter to Phyllis Schlafly From 12 Year-Old Madison Kimrey - Wow. I wish I was that well spoken when I was 12! And that metaphor is pretty much perfect!
My wife was murdered by a 'monster' – but most perpetrators of violence are normal men - I always feel like we're actually getting somewhere when I read an article like this.
Cuddlebuggery Swearing Style Guide - AHAHAH this is the best! In the interest of not getting phone calls from my family about being inappropriate, I won' say which is my favourite (or favourites. They're all pretty fantastic haha)
Even More SFF Bunnies (and Other Strange, Rabbit-Type Creatures) - Wow this is a pretty comprehensive list.  You go from Monty Python to Bunnicula (I LOVED those books as a kid! No one I know has even heard of it)  There's even a Redwall shout out!
Anthony Mackie Talks About Chris Evans’ “Tiny Ass,” Playing Falcon in Captain America - Or all the reasons why Anthony Mackie is seriously the best.
Update: Red Alert, There Are Cute Baby Dragons In the New How to Train Your Dragon 2 Trailer - *sniffles* oh it's so adorable and...and...I WANT A DRAGON!!!
Michael Socha set to join ‘Once Upon a Time’ as series regular - YESSSS!!!!!!! (Favourite character, and now Kirsty doesn't have to watch OUATiW to see him)
23 Cross-Fandom Couples That Should Have Been - YES PLEASE!! So many of these are THE BEST IDEA EVER.  I am forever going to pretend that Hooville is a thing.  Two of the most underrated characters that you gradually get to see how AWESOME they are...they are meant for each other.  I mean, nothing is stopping them, technically they are both in England! (And #6 - Nope. They kill each other. Hahahahaha)

Whew! Long list of stuff.  And to wrap up this week with a classical piece, I give you this....delightful video I just discovered *snickers*

  1. Ah I love that Fall Out Boy song :) Their video clips have gotten weirder as time has gone along I think lol

I am totally going to check out that Harry Potter link about the newbie visiting Hogwarts (the word 'unicorn' hooked me :P)

  2. I would definitely not disagree with that statement lol!

Yay! I ended up reading all three of the reviews she's done so far...it's seriously one of the most entertaining things I've ever read (some of her misconceptions!!). I might do something like that for Game of Thrones maybe...

  3. Bunnicula!!! That was totally my favorite as a kid. I think I still have copies of them too. I love how they also mention Watership Down's film version. Like the blog author, I watched it as a kid and was fascinated and horrified. Of course, I tended towards darker films as a kid...Dark Crystal anyone? I'm surprised I'm not MORE traumatized! LOL. Have I mentioned how much I love these posts of yours? You find the best links.

  4. You know, I didn't even know there was a Watership Down film until fairly recently! The book was so depressing I don't know that I'll ever make it to the film. (And holy cow I watch Dark Crystal last year and...WHAT. I can't even haha)

*blushes* Why thank you! ...although I think it perhaps says more about the unhealthy amount of time I spend online than I would like to admit haha

  5. Uh, yeah...the film is pretty...disturbing. Rabbits aren't supposed to do that! LOL! And yeah...the 80s were a weird time. :/

  6. Whhaaaat?! Seriously? It's a classic! I think I've seen it almost as many times as I've watched The Princess Bride! (Which is saying something. I have an unhealthy obsession with The Princess Bride haha)

  7. ME TOO!! My big three are The Princess Bride, Neverending Story and Labyrinth. :D

  8. ...so confession...I still haven't seen Labrynth! I mean considering the other two are in my all time favourites, I'm a bit surprised I never saw it growing up. Must remedy!

  9. I didn't see Labyrinth until I was teenager, so don't feel too bad. It is hilariously bad. And bares repeat views so it really sinks in. Hahaha

  10. Oh but good/bad movies are the best lol. Have you ever seen The Room? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLrXDtlT68c That last scene is probably my favourite hahaha

  11. Oh my goodness - so many links to explore. My brain is exploding. I will totally join the celebration of great slightly creepy, slightly bad eighties fantasy films. I recently horrified a number of colleagues by pointing out that this running vampire bat looks just like the landstriders they ride in The Dark Crystal.

  12. Yeah that's what happens when I procrastinate about doing these posts for weeks hahah and OH MY GOD THEY TOTALLY DO!

You know I've never been much of a Fall Out Boy fan, a few songs here and there but I'm in love with the whole Save Rock & Roll LP, and it's on vinyl yesssssss.

Uhm, writing in books. Ahhhhhhhh. I'm more likely to writing and highlighting in a paperback more than a hardback because hardbacks are preccccious. Thouh I am seriously thinking of doing that to one of my copies of The Fault in Our Stars, because so many quotes. So little time and too many to look for, and besides the one is already defaced where I cried all over it. And yeah, I'm more likely to ruin school books more because you just have to.

I reat at midnight. (Okay, not midnight, from like 10-11.30 and sometimes 2-4. I just can't concentrate reading the day. I've tried. It just does not happen. I take a book with me wherever I go just in case but I never even take it out of my bag.The poor thing suffocates.

I didn't know about the Hogwarts thing. Now I'm going.

Speak is one of my favourites (so I'll be reading that after) but WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT AT AN AQUARIUM?! The fishes are innocent, people.

  14. Your statement about Fall Out Boy? That's exactly how I feel haha! Also what? Vinyl? WAAANNNTTTT. (Although I appear to have lost the cord to my record player as I've been using my roommate's - I know what are the odds of two people owning a record player haha)

I just can't do it! I mean I'm "scribble" all over my ebook copies, so I don't know what bothers me so much about writing in my own but it...makes me feel like I'm thinking about chalk. (Do you know what I mean?)

Yeah I definitely do my best reading at night with no distractions. I do plenty of reading on the train though (I've only missed my stop 3 times! Which is amazing), but I don't do well when I have to try and make sure I get off at the right place and I like to read in one sitting instead of stops and starts.

I can't freaking figure out how to enroll for my class!!! Argh!

....aquarium? I feel like I must have skipped a big section of something because I am so very lost hahaha!

  15. Arrrrtttttaaaaxxxxxxx!!! Oh man. I LOVE that movie. I still quote it. Which is sad considering no one knows what I'm talking about, especially when I break out "To the winch, wench!"

  16. Considering when it was made I'm not sure I even want to know hahaha. Yeah, some of the most traumatizing things came out of the 80s, I swear! I think The Neverending Story would be included on that list for me as I'm pretty sure long drawnout death by sinkhole scenes wouldn't be kosher these days haha
