Top Ten books for people who think YA is only for girls

I have to say that some of this idea was definitely inspired by Gillian at Writer of Wrongs (whose post made me want to weep with joy!)  This list is books that I think anyone with the general interest would enjoy - that means girls AND guys of all ages (well ok, not too young obviously).  I also tried to pick books that have plenty of diversity!

Clicking the picture will take you to goodreads/a review of the book!

For people who enjoy dystopias:

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1)

The Giver (The Giver Quartet, #1)                  The House of the Scorpion

For people who never thought fantasy or religion could blow your mind and rip out your heart.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1)

For people who enjoyed Lord of the Flies but wished it had aliens/kids with superpowers

Gone (Gone, #1)

For people who enjoy fantasy, epic characters, and general badassery

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)

For people who want a book to take you past the realms of your own imagination (or people who love gorgeous, mind bending, colorful, imaginative art)

Abarat (Abarat, #1)

For people who enjoy fantasy, the Undead...and music?

Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1)

For people who like steampunk/alternate history

Worldshaker (Worldshaker, #1)                     Leviathan (Leviathan, #1)

For people who love anthropology....or people who wanted to be Indiana Jones but didn't want to give up their flute

City of the Beasts (Eagle and Jaguar, #1)

For people who enjoy vampires (but scary ones)

Peeps (Peeps, #1)                    Sunshine

For people who enjoy evil sociopathic masterminds and scientific faeries

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1)

For people who like mythology, humor, and epic demigod quests

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)

For people who enjoy awesome characters, fighting, magic, spies - or how about you just read one of these series?

Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, #1)                     Wild Magic (Immortals, #1)

First Test (Protector of the Small, #1)                    Trickster's Choice (Daughter of the Lioness, #1)

Terrier (Beka Cooper, #1)                    Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, #1)

For everyone.  Duh.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

And that's it for this week's TTT!  What made your list?  Leave me a link below!  (If you don't, I won't be able to find your blog - Disqus doesn't automatically link!)

I love the topic of your list. I also love Tamora Pierce's books and several others books on here. I never see Bruiser by Neal Shusterman on lists, but I think it's a great book for both guys and girls.

  2. Wow! Great choices Elizabeth. It just proves that YA definitely isn't just for girls!

  3. You know, I still have not read a Neal Shusterman book yet! Which I think is crazy because I'm always hearing how awesome his books are!

  6. Oh, nice list! SABRIEL and LEVIATHAN made my list, too. I didn't think of doing so many different 'types' of people, but it definitely works. Thanks for sharing!

  8. I've read a couple of these, but the Gone series is a favorite. A completely messed up world that has no boundaries. Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Those are definitely some BOY looking covers :) I like how you have SCARY vampire books and not the "I fell in love with a vampire" books. Definitely better to go scary for boys. I've seen Gone and The Giver on a few other boy lists, so they must be good picks! I almost bought Gone the last time I was at B&N... I should have :(

Thanks for stopping by My TTT

  12. Definitely - I have a couple friends who thought Harry Potter was boring! How is that possible?! Luckily they're in the minority.

It looks like your link isn't to your blog? I hope you stop by again and leave me another link!

  13. Yeah this is definitely a lot of my all time favourite books!

  14. Yeah we definitely have similar taste in books if your blog is anything to judge by :)

  15. READ ALL THE BOOKS!! But seriously, these are definitely some of my favourite books of all time :)

  16. I really need to finish this series, it's so crazy! I've only made it through the first two books so far though :(

  17. YES YES YES YES YES!!! If you don't like this series I will be broken hearted! Although either way I can't wait to hear your thoughts (if you don't review the books for your blog, shoot me an e-mail or pm on goodreads because I'd love to hear what you have to say!). Do you have the third book lined up as well or just the second?

  18. Yeah I'm honestly not a big fan of paranormal romance - I'm a big believer that if we did have such things in our world, they would not be dark misunderstood people, they'd be terrifying monsters that would eat you! I'd definitely recommend Gone - if you combined Lord of the Flies, aliens, and superpowers that's what you'd get. The world is SCARILY realistic - like if all the adults suddenly disappeared in our world, this is exactly how I'd see it going down!

  19. I remember liking the first when I read it 10 years ago. I just never got around to the second even though I have it. I don't have the third, but I think I will have to hunt it down. I will totally let you know what I think!

  20. Yeah I hate that it takes him so long between books! But then I remember how much I love them and how insanely busy he is with his 20 billion other projects and I forgive haha

  21. Oh, I like what you did here! I'm currently reading Throne of Glass and LOVING it! Finally a girl who is confident and not whiny about how "average" she looks. *sigh*

  22. YES. THAT. That is a huge part of the reason I love Celaena! I love having a character with confidence in her abilities, talents, and looks! I came to ToG after Everneath (which made me want to chuck the book across the room the MC was so awful!) so that was perfect timing as I was getting fed up with YA MC's haha. If you think you love ToG - you won't know what love is until you read Crown of Midnight. Seriously. It's even better! Have you read the prequels? If you haven't, I'd recommend reading them before Crown of Midnight (and back to back since they read more like a novel on their own if you read all 4 back to back).

  23. P.s. I can't remember which blog you're from! Leave me a link?

  24. This is a fantastic (extremely diverse list). I always think it's quite difficult to find a book that can appeal to both men and women but I think many of these books you recommended will do just that! I recently finished a novel that I can definitely see male and female readers really enjoying. It's called “Sex, Rain and Cold Fusion” (the title alone should hook you!) by author A.R. Taylor (www.lonecamel.com).
This is a laugh out loud story of a physicist named David Oster who is
living a life full of women (and bad decisions!) until he decides to
chase a dream out to Washington. He is researching the physics of deep
ocean waves while secretly pursuing the elusive “fifth force”. He has to
overcome the pressures of colleagues, a demanding romance with an older
woman and his controlling boss in his quest to uncover the truth….not
to mention the attempted murder! The book truly takes some wacky twists
and turns but will keep you hooked and laughing throughout. You will not
be able to put it down

  25. Seriously His Dark Materials blew my mind (and broke my heart) and has remained one of my favourite series since the first time I read it over a decade ago now...that makes me feel old saying that...

And any time someone tries to give me a reason why they didn't like Harry Potter, I just cover my ears and sing lalalala til they stop hahaha

  26. Great list. There are some that I already want to read.
I've seen a lot of Tamora Pierce's books on a lot of list...I'm going to try to check one of them out.
I like Vampire stories and I prefer them to be scary. I don't mind if they have some humanity...but please keep the romancing to the minimum...;) So I really enjoyed Peep...but I've never heard of Sunshine until today and will definitely try to get a copy of it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's definitely one of my absolute favourite series now!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It sounds like a really funny book - a bit like Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series or Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's series. I'll have to check it out!

    ReplyDelete
  29. yes to the Golden Compass! you're right, Harry Potter is perfect for EVERYONE. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Tamora Pierce is definitely one of my favourite authors of all time! I hope you end up loving her books as much as I do! And Robin McKinley is another favourite author of mine! Sunshine isn't as scary as Peeps, but it definitely trends toward scary more than sexy
