Top Ten New To Me Authors

Hosted by The Broke and Bookish

As always, in no particular order!

Author of the Throne of Glass series.  Crown of Midnight is my favourite book of 2013!

Sarah Rees Brennan

Author of The Demon's Lexicon Trilogy and The Lynburn Legacy.  Unspoken is tied with CoM for favourite book I read this year (Hint hint, I don't own either book.  Or Throne of Glass!)  If you don't want to take my word for how awesome it is, what about Tamora Pierce?  SHE SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU GO READ THIS!

Author of The Dresden Files.  It may have taken me ages, but I finally started this series and I love it!

Author of Kushiel's Legacy (a series).  I have never been so surprised by a book in my life!  Marketed as an erotica, it's actually a crazy detailed high-fantasy!  Seriously this is some of the best world building I've EVER read and I seriously recommend this to all fantasy lovers (but especially one who enjoys a few naughty bits).

Author of Peaches, the May Bird series, and most importantly Tiger Lily, which was one of the most beautifully written novels I've read (and made my heart all smooshed)

Author of Ship Breaker, one of the most dystopian dystopias I've had the pleasure to read.  (Also it's terrifyingly realistic and has a sequel I can't wait to read!)

Author of The Slayer Chronicles, The Chronicles of Vladmir Too, and Soulbound which features my favourite heroine since Katsa (and lasted until I met Celaena much later in the year, also breaking my streak of favourite heroines whose name started with Ka)

Author of Linked and the sequel's coming out next year!

Author of A Cat Called Dog which is the CUTEST most ADORABLE and FUNNIEST book I have ever read and you need to read it!  Go buy this asap for all your family and friends and support this author because I want more cat books like this!!!!

 Cinda Williams Chima

Portrait of Cinda

Author of The Heir Chronicles (which I have yet to read and need to get to ASAP) and The Seven Realms.  I can't believe I only discovered her this year, her writing is awesome!

Author of Sure Signs of Crazy.  Were you a To Kill A Mockingbird nerd?  Read this.  Love thought-provoking, heart breaking, well-written middle grade fiction?  Read this.  Just read this!

Scott Lynch

Author of a series that has me shipping a couple so much I might go crazy waiting for the next book.  I haven't shipped anyone this much since Buffy met Angel.  Since I started the series backwards, I highly recommend you start with the first book in The Gentleman Bastard series, The Lies of Locke Lamora.

Award winning author of Mockingbird and Seeing Red.  Pretty much any of the criteria I put for Sure Signs of Crazy applies here as well.  Added plus?  I'm quoted on her blog!  *fangirl squeal*!!

There are so many more authors I could add to this list I'm sure!  But technically I'm already over ten, so I'll stop while I've realized I can't count.  This has been such a great year for introducing me to new authors!  Any of these authors new to you as well?  Leave me a comment (AND A LINK TO YOUR BLOG) so I can see who made your list!

  2. It feels like everyone has Sarah J. Maas on their list. I'm trying so hard to wait a little longer before I start the series so that I don't have to wait for the next book again and again but you guys make this near impossible! :D

Haven't heard about some of these authors. Going to check them out on GR ASAP.

  3. Great list! Jim Butcher and Scott Lynch's books are fun, though I've only read the first volume in each! Maybe next year I'll get around to the rest of their series ;)

  4. I have been dancing around starting the Dresdan Files. Perhaps I should just take the leap and try it.

  5. I've wanted to read Throne of Glass for SUCH a long time, so I have no idea why I still haven't read it. It's definitely on my tbr list for the coming year :)

  6. Oh man, definitely some new authors to add to the TBR! I haven't read Kushiel, but my best friend was obsessed with those books for awhile. :D

  7. There are so many authors on your list that I can't wait to get to such as Sarah Rees Brennan! But I'm so glad to see Sarah J Maas on here, I absolutely adored both of her books! Thanks for stopping by! :)

  8. Sarah J Maas is so fabulous!! Ahh, Sarah Rees Brennan is so FUNNY in person! I need to read her! And you're comparing her to Tamora Pierce? Ohhh! I need to get back into the Dresden books! OMG, TIGER LILY! *swoon* I cannot wait for Jodi Lynn Anderson's next book in 2014! Huh...a local author writes the Kushka picture books, about the dog called cat! (in Russian!) Cinda Williams Chima!! I've read her Heir books, but have been DYING for the Seven Realms to finish up so I could read them all together! Oh, and I need to get around to MOCKINGBIRD! Great list!

  9. I love so much that you discovered the Dresden Files. My husband read the whole series in like two months. I was like "slow down!!"

  10. I think you'd really like the Cinda Williams Chima series, for one (And I'm super biased about ToG which I think everyone should read haha)

  11. I'm totally the same way about series! I go mildly insane after cliffhangers, so I try to wait until things have finished. The ToG series is looking to be in for the long haul though, so you'd have to wait the better part of a decade (I'm pretty sure she's planning on at least 6 or 7 books). The great thing about this series is that she releases a bunch of novellas in between books which is really awesome. And I don't really bother with novellas, but I'm glad I read these because reading them back to back really makes for basically another novel in the series!

  12. Jim Butcher is so much fun! It's like reading Magnum P.I. if Magnum were a wizard based in Chicago! I can attest that Scott Lynch's most recent book is absolutely fantastic, if that helps, as I maaaaay have accidentally not read the first two, and have only read the third haha. I'm definitely remedying that in the new year!

  13. Do it! It's a really fun series, and it's great because each novel you can read as a standalone. No crazy cliffhangers!

  14. Definitely put it at the top! The series as a whole is so amazing (And Celaena is like the best heroine that has ever happened to me). If you aren't convinced by ToG, wait til you read Crown of Midnight. Trust me.

  15. It seriously shocked me! It wasn't at all what I was expecting, which made it that much more awesome. I'm really world-building/character centric and both of those in these books...is just insane. I mean for one, the first trilogy takes our heroine from when she's 10 to when she's around 30. The worldbuilding isn't done about just one land, she's mapped out the entire world, basing it a lot off of our own ancient cultures, but tweaking them here and there. It's really cool!

  16. I have seriously been obsessing of ToG and Celaena. Pretty much any time I have used an example since I read this series, it has been about Celaena haha! And Sarah Rees Brennan is super fun, I can't wait for you to get to her books either!

  17. If Sarah Rees Brennan is anything like Kami (the main character in The Lynburn Legacy), then I'm not surprised that she's so funny! Kami might be the funniest character I've ever come across. Tamora Pierce gave a quote for her book, hence her opinion being pretty much the only reason I would need to read the books at all if I hadn't already haha.

Jodi Lynn Anderson has definitely made my go get that book instantly list after Tiger Lily! That's really cute that someone else has come up with the reverse of Jem Vanston haha! And I think the Seven Realms is finished, so you're good to go there as soon as you have time!

  18. Holy crap! There are like a bajillion books in this series! Hahaha well I'm glad he found something he liked!

  19. So happy you found Sarah J. Maas this year -- she's a favorite of mine!

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's definitely my new favourite series, and I don't see anyone toppling Celaena off her throne of new favourite heroine ever any time soon!

  21. We are just now checking out the graphic novel series of Dresden....and the short story book which is good too.

  22. Lots of intriguing authors on here with good juicy sounding series! I always crave a good series that will suck me in. I do love Scott Lynch and like the Dresden Files - glad you got acquainted with them this year! For some reason I had issues with Kushiel's Dart when I read it eons ago - I agree that it's pretty great storytelling and world building but I hit a wall like 3/4 through with the main character. But I think I'm unusually grumpy and sensitive about characters - I annoy myself:) No overlap with my list which is fun!

  23. She'd been on tour with other authors...mmm, perhaps Smart Chicks Kick It? (Maybe?) So. Funny! I keep putting off UNSPOKEN because I drag my heels over anything paranormal, but her humor and the fact that my beloved Tamora Pierce blurbed her now has her shooting up my list of mut read!

I want to read THE VANISHING SEASON just *because* it's by JLA, since it's not my normal genre!

Right?? AND he really has a dog named Kushka and brings her out to schools and stuff all the time. She's the sweetest, nicest little dog!!!

It is finished, yep! I didn't have time to read it when the final book came out...and still haven't. SOON!!!

  24. I promise you it's worth it - I'm not a fan of paranormal (but for me it's usually the type of romance you find). She manages to take everything you expect in a paranormal romance and give it a little twist. And also Tamora Pierce blurbed her, and I'd read anything she blurbs!

I have to say that's the exact same reason I'm interested in The Vanishing Season since it doesn't sound like something I'd pick up otherwise haha

  25. I didn't know there was a graphic novel series! It seems like it'd be a perfect medium to adapt to and I bet it looks awesome. You'll have to let me know if they're worth checking out!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I feel so overwhelmed by series sometimes! ...But at the same time when they're really good I absolutely devour them haha. There were some things I had a hard time with in Kushiel's Dart as well. I'm not really into S/M BDSM things, and since Phedre...well...is, things happen that I just can't understand. Like her weird connection with Melisande. But I like everything else about the series, so I decided to just ignore those bits haha
