Top 10 Most Memorable Secondary Creatures

Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter

There is NO WAY this is not at the top of everyone's list. And if they aren't, well why on earth aren't they??  For once I absolutely mean this is my first choice.  But really, I'd include all the characters in Harry Potter universe.  I mean when Dobby dies - DID YOUR HEART NOT BREAK?!   And I know I'm not alone in knowing the Fred is alive.  He never died - it's all lies!!  And while I'm tempted to make a top 10 Harry Potter secondary characters post, I know that everyone would agree with me (there is no way to disagree with JK Rowlings characters.  Seriously).  So I thought I'd do a top 10 secondary animals...or other creatures instead.

1.  Pantalaimon from His Dark Materials

Also known as Lyra's daemon.  A daemon is basically a physical representation of your soul (and as seen in this picture, Pantalaimon settles on being a pine martin).  Wouldn't you like to be able to be bff's with your soul and hang out all the time?

2.  Algernon from Flowers for Algernon

God I was devastated by this book...I'm tearing up just thinking about it :-/

3.  Faithful from the Song of the Lioness Quartet

Alanna's cat/god companion (I'm not entirely how to categorize Faithful).  There are so many great characters in this series (I almost picked Buri, I LOVE BURI), but then I made this list animals, so Faithful is the obvious choice.

4.  Dobby from Harry Potter

You start out sort of hating Dobby, but oh man by the end do you love him!

5. Reepicheep from The Chronicles of Narnia

A true gentleman - brave and courteous.  They should make all men that way!

6.  Disreputable Dog and Mogget from the Abhorsen series

Artwork done by RohanElf

Lirael is my favourite book from the Abhorsen series, and the Disreputable Dog is by far one of the biggest reasons why.  And of course I love the super snarky Mogget!

7.  Ash from Deerskin

Artwork done by Joy Fulcanis

One of only a few characters here who does not a human /supernatural personality, you couldn't get a more loyal companion than Ash.  I know many of you haven't read Deerskin, as it's not one of McKinley's more well known works, but I highly recommend it.

8.  Gollum from The Hobbit

Although I expect Gollum will be making his rounds on many these lists - predominantly under The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is where I first met Gollum and was deliciously creeped out by him.

I know I'm not the only one who loved Rontu more than her little brother.

10.  Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes

I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes in both the sense I read it and the sense that I lived it.  My little brother was a reincarnation of Calvin I swear (Yeah.. Imagine living with that) and he had a stuffed tiger as well!

Honorable Human Mentions

Bailey tells it like it is, and is totally heartbreaking in the process.

Akane and Aoi from Love So Life

THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!  If I am going to be completely honest, they are 100% of the reason I read this manga.  I mean sure, it's a cute story, but honestly I don't care about the other characters at all - I just want more Akane and Aoi!

And that's it for this week's TTT!  What's on your list?  Leave me a link below!

(No really - leave me an actual link...as far as I can tell with Disqus it won't send me to your blog, so I might not be able to figure out where you post.  Also if anyone has tips on how to get Disqus to send me to someone's blog, do tell me because I'm not having much luck finagling with it so far)

  1. Oh man Algernon!! That book tears me up so badly, but he's perfect for this list. And Faithful! You're the first person I've seen who also has a Tamora Pierce character on their list!

    Here's my list.

  2. Tamora Pierce ftw!

Yeah as much as I thought Flowers for Algernon was one of the most amazing books I've ever read, I don't think my heart could stand another read through of it haha

  3. I love Tamora Pierce. She was my introduction to fantasy (along with Piers Anthony which I'm not sure what that says about me).

I read Flowers for Algernon a couple times for classes and each time it wrecked me emotionally.

  4. Yeah Tamora Pierce played a big part in shaping my entire childhood practically from conception to...well now. It's not as if I reread all of her books every year....or anything..*shifty eyes*. You know I actually had to look up who Piers Anthony is? His name rang a bell, but I've not read anything by him (I think). But he's in the same sentence as Tamora Pierce so - where would you recommend I start?

O.O You...read Flowers for Algernon MORE THAN ONCE?! And survived?? I have a new found respect for you, madame.

  5. I'm reading some of the other series. I started with The Immortals and then moved on from there. I kind of bounced around the timeline a lot. Piers Anthony...is unusual and a little weird. I started with the Xanth series.

I did! I read it in 6th grade. And then twice in high school.

  6. I very nearly put Ron and Hermione on my list. They are incredible characters!

  7. Ha, I love that you made a list of animals! And yes, I would love a Top Ten Harry Potter characters! Except 10 wouldn't be enough...

  8. I have Ron and Hermione at the top of my list, too! They were the first sidekicks that I thought of when I read the Top Ten Tuesday Challenge. However, I forgot Dobby. I also saw on another list that someone included Snape.

  9. Dobby!! I remember when he was first introduced I hated his character - okay, maybe hated is an over exaggeration, but I really disliked him. But then as the series progressed I slowly started to see how great he was. And then Gollum!! I remember reading The Hobbit and being crept out by his character.

    Great list!

  10. Yay for Reepicheep - I loved how all the others were willing to cut off their tails out of loyalty. He may be small but he's definitely feisty. I picked Gollum for my list too but ignored Ron and Hermione in favour of Snape. Here's mine T10T

Haha, well for our list Ron & Hermione aren't on there (or any HP characters) because our whole list would have been made of HP characters, LOL!

    DOBBY! *sobs*

Ohhh good one with Bailey! Loved her too :)

Great list! Thanks for stopping by ours earlier! Have a great Tuesday :)

  12. Aw, I forgot Dobby! And he's one of my favorites :( Except for Gollum, all the others are unfamiliar to me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Haha Ron and Hermione were #1 on my list also, but OMG I cant believe I forgot Bailey!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. They were the first people that jumped to my mind haha. As I was making this list I realized that I think I love secondary characters more than main characters...I could make a top 100 of this list haha!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I know right? I would have no self control and would just name every character in the series!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah I was so tempted to put Snape because he's just...fantastic (and I'm a big Hermione/Snape shipper - don't judge!). And then I decided to make my life easier and use animals instead haha

    ReplyDelete
  17. AWESOME list! I forgot about Disreputable Dog and Mogget! I need to reread that book. Here is mine: http://www.rexrobotreviews.com/2013/08/top-ten-tuesday-favorite-secondary.html

  18. Also I'm not sure if I stopped by your blog, but if I didn't leave me a link as I'm not sure how else to see your TTT!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I know the riddle scene is one of the most famous scenes from the book (in fact if you haven't read The Hobbit, you STILL know about the riddle scene haha). But it is so perfect and so creepy!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah I really love Snape (and well...everyone really I have no self control in regards to HP)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah I started this list and I was like oooh Ron/Hermione! And Snape! And Neville...and and...OH MY GOD I NEED TO STOP. And that was the end of my human TTT hahah

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not even Calvin and Hobbes or Reepicheep?! You 100% need to read a Tamora Pierce book or Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials or ... all of these books, just read all of them (except Flowers for Algernon. You will drown in a puddle of your own tears)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would have been shocked if they weren't #1 on your list. I would have seriously thought you had been infiltrated by aliens or something

    ReplyDelete
  24. Every time I do these TTT posts, all I want to do is reread all my favourite books haha

    ReplyDelete
  25. Who doesn't love Dobby right? Love how you added Gollum! He's such a good and important character in Tolkien's books

    ReplyDelete
  26. Totally forgot about the Chronicles of Narnia. They are great books though, and Reepicheep was definitely a cool character! I love the Harry Potter series as well. Nice list!

  27. REEPICHEEP. How did I not think of him when I was doing my list? He is the BEST. Also, it's delightful to see some Tamora Pierce appreciation going on. Faithful and Buri are both awesome. Also, Raoul.

  28. Surprisingly I think Gollum was the only evilish character to make the list (and I usually love my evil characters)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah everyone who picked a character from Chronicles of Narnia picked Mr. Tumnus (which admittedly if I had thought of it I would have included). But Reepicheep just has this...sort of ridiculous charm about him

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hahah that was my exact next thought when I was thining of Tamora Pierce I was like..oooh Faithful. But I love Buri. Wait Raoul!! I'm glad I limited myself to animals or my list would never have ended haha. And I'm glad to see Reepicheep getting some love here!

  31. Oh my gosh, Love so Life. I loved this manga. It's nice to see manga characters being featured on book blogs. xD Also, thanks for dropping by my blog.

  32. Yayy! I was hoping someone who had read Love so Life would stop by!

  33. I can agree with most of the ones you mentioned here! My pick from Harry Potter would be Fred and George though. They added humor and snark to the movies and books. They were adorable.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I loved Fred and George! They're by far the funniest characters.
